Raw Dog Food for Dogs with a Chicken Allergy: What to Feed Instead

Raw Dog Food for Dogs with a Chicken Allergy: What to Feed Instead

If your dog can't have chicken, raw feeding can actually make life easier. Complete raw foods usually list just one or two proteins on the pack, so it is simple to see exactly what your dog is eating. The trick is knowing where chicken hides and picking foods that leave it out completely.

Changing food? Check the amount too. Our raw feeding calculator shows how many grams a day your dog needs and how much food you will get through each month.

Is it really chicken?

Itchy skin, ear trouble and upset tummies have lots of possible causes, so if you think your dog reacts to chicken, talk to your vet first. They may suggest an elimination diet, where your dog eats one protein they have not had before for several weeks while you watch for changes.

Raw food suits this well, because a single protein complete food contains just that meat with its own bone and organ.

Where chicken hides

  • Blends: recipes like Chicken and Beef or Chicken and Tripe contain chicken even when it is not the first word on the label.
  • Treats and chews: check every treat, not just the main meal.
  • Variety boxes: standard mixed boxes usually include chicken recipes, so choose a dedicated chicken free box instead.
  • Other poultry: chicken free does not always mean poultry free. Turkey and duck are different proteins, but if your vet thinks your dog reacts to poultry in general, stick to red meat and fish.

Our chicken free boxes

These boxes give a chicken free dog plenty of variety without you having to pick every flavour yourself:

  • Supreme Raw Chicken Free Allergy Box: complete 80/10/10 rolls with proteins such as beef, lamb, rabbit and salmon.
  • Stobart No Chicken Allergy Box: complete 454g chubs with beef, lamb, turkey, duck, salmon and tripe. This box contains other poultry, so if your dog needs red meat only, ask us and we will make up a mix for you.
  • Reggie's No Chicken Allergy Box: complete 500g rolls from across the Reggie's range, minus the chicken.
  • Raw Pet Treat No Chicken Bundle: 500g packs of beef, lamb, duck, turkey, tripe and oily fish. Most Raw Pet Treat packs are meat or meat and tripe rather than complete meals, so use them as toppers alongside a complete food.

Single protein options

If your vet wants you to keep to one protein, these complete foods contain just one meat:

Making the switch

Bring in one new protein at a time and give it a week or two before adding another, so you can tell what suits your dog. If you are moving from kibble, our 10 day switching plan takes you through it step by step. Not sure which brand to pick? Our brand comparison puts Stobart, K9 Raw, Supreme Raw and Reggie's side by side.

This guide is general advice. Food allergies and intolerances should be diagnosed by a vet, so please speak to yours before changing your dog's diet, especially if they have ongoing skin, ear or tummy problems.
