Raw food arrives frozen, and it needs to go straight into the freezer. Before you place a big order, it is worth working out how much your dog gets through and how much space you really have. A little planning saves money, deliveries and a lot of freezer Tetris.
Start with the daily amount. Our raw feeding calculator shows how many grams a day your dog needs and how much food you will get through each month.
Step 1: work out your monthly amount
Most adult dogs eat around 2 to 3 percent of their ideal body weight each day. Multiply the daily amount by 30 and you have a rough monthly figure. As examples:
- 10kg dog at 2.5 percent: 250g a day, or about 7.5kg a month.
- 20kg dog at 2.5 percent: 500g a day, or about 15kg a month.
- 30kg dog at 2 percent: 600g a day, or about 18kg a month.
Our feeding guide explains how to choose the right percentage for your dog.
Step 2: turn it into packs
Most of our foods come in 454g packs (Stobart chubs, Supreme Raw rolls and K9 Raw blocks) or 500g packs (Reggie's rolls and Raw Pet Treat). A 20kg dog eating 500g a day gets through roughly one pack a day, so a box of 30 lasts about a month.
Many products come in box sizes of 10, 20, 30, 60, 90 or 120 packs, so pick the size closest to the number of weeks you want to cover.
Step 3: check your freezer
- Measure before you order. Empty a drawer or shelf and see how many packs it holds. The easiest test is a small first order.
- Think about shape. Chubs and rolls lie neatly in rows, and blocks stack well.
- Leave room for air. A packed solid freezer still needs to close properly and keep its temperature.
- Keep it at the right temperature. Raw food should be kept frozen at minus 18°C or below.
If your kitchen freezer is full, a small chest or upright freezer in a utility room or garage is what many raw feeders end up with. Check the freezer is rated for the room it sits in, as some models do not work well in a cold garage.
Step 4: choose an order size
Small and often
A box of 10 or 20 packs fits in most kitchen freezers. It suits small dogs, new raw feeders and anyone short on space.
Bulk and less often
If you have the space, bigger boxes mean fewer deliveries. Our bulk boxes hold 60 packs (around 27kg) of beef and lamb complete. At the time of writing, the Supreme Raw Bulk Box is £65.99, the Stobart 27.2kg Combo Box is £68.99 and the K9 Raw Bulk Box is £73.40. For a 20kg dog fed 500g a day, 27.2kg is about 54 days of food.
Step 5: time your delivery
We dispatch Monday to Thursday so frozen food never sits in a depot over a weekend. Order before 10am Monday to Thursday and we normally dispatch the same day, with next day delivery. Make sure someone is in, and clear the freezer space before the box arrives. Full details are in our shipping policy.
Reorder when you are down to about a week's worth, so a delay never leaves you short. Subscribe and Save can do this for you automatically.
Storage tips
- Use the oldest packs first: put new deliveries at the back or bottom.
- Thaw one or two days of food at a time in the fridge, in a covered container on the bottom shelf.
- Once thawed, use within 48 hours and never refreeze.
- Keep raw food separate from human food, ideally in its own drawer or container.
Our storage and handling guide covers hygiene in more detail.
