Most raw diets are built around red and white meats, but fish is a popular addition. It brings a different flavour, a different mix of fats and a welcome change for dogs who need a break from poultry. Here is how raw feeders use it.
Adding fish? Keep the total the same. Fish toppers and treats are part of the daily amount, not extra. Our raw feeding calculator shows how much your dog needs in total.
Why raw feeders add fish
- Omega 3 fats. Oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines are natural sources of omega 3, which is why they are often used for dogs with dull coats or dry skin.
- Variety. Fish is a completely different protein, which makes it a useful part of a rotation.
- An alternative to poultry. For dogs who cannot have chicken, fish recipes widen the choice.
Complete fish recipes
If you want fish as a full meal, choose a complete recipe that already includes bone and offal:
- Supreme Raw Salmon and Veg Complete: 80 percent salmon, 10 percent bone and 10 percent offal, with vegetables.
- Stobart Salmon and Veg: salmon and vegetables in 454g chubs.
- Stobart Salmon and Beef: a fish and red meat mix.
- Supreme Raw Chicken and Salmon Complete and Beef and Salmon Complete: fish mixed with a meat protein.
Oily fish toppers
Plain fish packs are not complete meals on their own, so use them as a topper over a complete food, or as part of a diet you balance yourself:
- Raw Pet Treat Oily Fish: 500g packs of oily fish such as salmon, mackerel or sardines.
- Reggie's Salmon Mince: pure salmon in a soft mince.
Tripe and fish blends such as Stobart Tripe and Oily Fish and Supreme Raw Tripe and Oily Fish are popular with fussy eaters too. Check each product page to see how it is best fed.
A spoonful or two of a fish topper over a complete meal a few times a week is how many raw feeders start. Our green tripe guide explains more about tripe.
Sprats as treats
Sprats are small whole fish, and air dried sprats are a favourite training treat with raw feeders. They are single ingredient and need no fridge. Our Stobart 26 Mixed Flavours and 1kg Sprats box pairs 26 mixed Stobart chubs with a kilo of air dried sprats, and costs £35.98 at the time of writing. Treat them as part of the daily allowance, not as an extra meal.
How to introduce fish
- Start with a small amount mixed into a meal your dog already knows.
- Increase slowly over a week or so, and watch for loose poo.
- Fish is rich, so too much at once can upset some tummies.
- Keep notes, especially if you are rotating several proteins.
Our guide to raw feeding with a chicken allergy explains how to choose single protein options if your dog has food sensitivities.
Safety and storage
Raw fish needs the same care as raw meat. Keep it frozen until needed, thaw it in the fridge and use it within 48 hours. Wash hands, bowls and surfaces after handling. Our storage and handling guide covers the details.
